New Bern is a wonderful place to live. The town is historic, the people are friendly and the weather is delightful. Located on the confuence of the Neuse and the Trent rivers, we have plenty of water for fishing, watersports and boating. In addition, New Bern is just inland from the coastal beaches.
New Bern is located in Craven County, North Carolina with a population of 23,128 as of the 2000 census. The estimated population in 2006 was 27,650. It is located at the convergence of the Trent and the Neuse rivers, 87 miles (140 km) northeast of Wilmington. New Bern is the second oldest town in North Carolina and served as the capital of the North Carolina colonial government and then briefly as the state capital. It is the county seat of Craven County and the principal city of the New Bern Micropolitan Statistical Area. Originally a Swiss settlement, the city is named after the capital of Switzerland, Bern and shares its flag. The Swiss connection (just as the Dutch in New Amsterdam, and German immigrants in Pennsylvania Dutch) with England was established by Marian exiles and marriages of the Royal House of Stuart, important people in the history of the Calvinism. New Bern is commonly known as the birthplace of Pepsi Cola. A good starting place in New Bern in The New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce and the Convention and Visitors Center. Historic Districts New Bern has several Historic Districts including the Downtown Historic District, Ghent Historic district and Riverside Historic District. Between them there are over 200 homes listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Golf Communities
New Bern offers several wonderful golfing communities with high quality golf courses. The Greenbrier is home to the Emerald Golf Club designed by Rees Jones. Taberna Golf Community is another Weyerhaeuser Community and boasts a georgous course and country club. Fairfield Harbour Golf Community has two golf courses and is also a boating community. River Bend New Bern's first golfing community, it has just undergone a huge facelift. Carolina Pines is another nearby golf community is located close to Cherry Point, with its signature hole overlooking the Neuse River. Carolina Colours is New Bern's newest golf community and its course will be completed in 2010.
